Setting up a Successful Garage Sale

By Marc Ragan of Precision Garage Doors Florida

Deciding to put together a garage sale is often done on a whim, but without proper plannning, it could turn out to be a dud. There are several factors you should take into consideration before setting up the tables and clearing out the garage for customers.

The first thing you should consider is, when and what time, you should have your garage sale. It makes the most sense to run a garage sale during the spring season, when it's warm enough for people to be out and about and not too hot for people to stay inside where the air conditioner is.

The best times to set up your garage sale is fairly early in the morning. If you're not a morning person you better set the alarm clock on the day of the sale because this is where you'll make the most sales. People like to go to garage sales around the times of 9am to 12pm before it gets too hot. You might have some success in the afternoon as well, but it often depends on how hot it outside.

Have you already decided on what you're going to sale? Think about some old clothes you haven't worn in a long time or some shoes that don't fit, but are still in good shape. Maybe some kitchenware you don't use or old toys from the kids. Electronics and basic furniture seem to do very well during garage sales. If you have some old boxes down in the basement or attic, think about selling the stuff inside. Usually if it's in a box, it most likely won't ever be used again. Let someone else get some use out of it.

Before you start setting everything up, make sure you don't need a permit. It's not at all very common that a permit is necessary, but some Homeowners Associations may require it. Some HOA's also prefer that you limit your garage sales to a certain amount per year, most often around 5.

Ready to start getting set up? Good!

If you want anyone to come to your garage sale, you should think about promoting it. The most common way of promoting a yard sale is by placing neon cardboard signs on telephone posts, stop signs and the bottoms of cardboard boxes with rocks in them to keep them from blowing away.

You should also consider posting your garage sale on local community blogs and websites and especially Craigslist. There's even a section on Craigslist dedicated to garage sales. Keep in mind that people won't waste their time driving to your garage sale if they don't know what you're selling, so think about adding a list of your items and even taking some pictures. This will bring people who are really interested in what you have to sell.

You'll want to clean out your garage and driveway so that you have plenty of room for people to walk around and see everything. Make sure your garage door is all the way so you prevent any sort of mishap with a customer and try to keep the garage door pulldown rope out of your visitors faces. You should also move your cars down the street if you can, so that there's plenty of parking for the buyers.

The best way to get people to notice your goods is by picking up some folding tables and placing the items you want to get the most attention on them. Stuff on the ground will be browsed, but you have to realize that a lot of people don't want to sit on the ground to look through your things, especially if they have bad backs or knees, which many elderly people have.

You should also be sure to have plenty of change and small bills in case anyone has change. If you don't have change, don't expect the potential buyer to come back when they say they'll run to the local gas station. One thing to note; you should consider purchasing one of those "fake money markers" so you can test large bills and prevent yourself from being ripped off. Scammers have done it to girl scouts, so don't think it can't happen to you.

Want to get your buyers more likely to purchase something? Set out some lemonade, kool-aid or tea. Offer some free refreshments and your customers will feel more comfortable and talkative, ultimately leading to them being more comfortable with making a purchase from you. They might even feel guilty if they leave without buying something.

If you've followed all of these steps, your garage sale should be a huge success.
